MODERNITY OF LESS MAKE UP
Why does it feel modern to wear little make up?
Why does full make up ‘applied by the rules’ aimed at flawlessness feel so old-fashioned?
Two questions that I’ve been asking myself.
It’s old news that expectations for men and women are different and that this is reflected in the expectations society placed on appearances. For men it was acceptable to become grey and wrinkly with age. We were accustomed to seeing the traces of life on their faces, the frowns on their foreheads, darker circles under their eyes and the lines that come with laughing and thinking. Women however, were judged much more on their appearance in addition to their achievements and capabilities. Certain traits were unfairly expected from all women; to be passive, to be kind, to be caring. (To be the nurse, not the doctor. And for men too; to be the doctor not the nurse.) A deep frown wrinkle would not match how this stereotypical woman would visually manifest. Advertisements gave solutions to problems that weren’t there in order to sell more cosmetics that women essentially didn’t need. They created a one-size-should-fit-all-beauty-mould of a certain color, height and shape that everyone should aspire to fit in.
I wrote this in the past tense as it feels completely obsolete and from another time.
In a modern age, everyone can visually shape their identity however they please and not just in a way to make appearances align with established rules or demands. (With as little or as much props and make up as needed.) For me most of the time less feels best.
/ Skin
This BB cream feels more like a moisturizer with magical powers to subtly make the skin look more even. It doesn’t completely conceal freckles and little veins and it doesn’t accumulate in fine wrinkles. It really doesn’t look like you’re wearing make up at all.
/ Eyes
Lots of white liner under the eyes and in the inner eye corners, smudged with fingers. What I love about white liner is that you can forget about it; rub your eyes, touch your face, laugh and cry. It will simply get lighter or disappear. Lightly traced my eyebrows to give them a bit more shape.
/ Lips
When putting on the BB cream I didn’t exclude them.
/ Hair
Although I prefer it pin straight and smooth, this bleached hair can not handle more damage from a straightening iron, thus I must embrace its natural wavy and stringy texture once in a while.
you are so flawless with minimal makeup, love the white on your eyes!

perfect as always…and with little make up you look even more fairy
BB creams are extra light. My skin loves it.
You are natural beauty :)))
First thought: AMEN!
Second thought: Make-up is fun, but we tend to forget what really makes our skin glow: a healthy lifestyle.
I absolutely adore this hair colour!

Als ik er zo goed uit zou zien zonder make-up, zou ik het ook niet dragen 😉 Ik heb de laatste tijd vaker veel minder op en ik voel me er best prima bij.

Lately I’m also more into the less is more look for my face.

So subtle and lovely x
Yes it is true that times have changed but if you read some (not all) of the over 40 blogs there are still many admonishments about what not to wear, “anti-aging products”, dye ones hair etc. One of the reasons I follow blogs like yours (and other younger bloggers) is because with your grey hair and minimal look you are saying this way of looking is modern and cool. I find way more inspiration from someone like you who believes that minimal is beautiful. I too am a fan of BB cream and use it on most days in lieu of foundation.
