Hong Kong, you hot mess – where to start.
A couple of weeks ago I was invited by We Are Constant to work on an all white installation that would display the new all white New Balance sneakers.
I stepped on the airplane with a few ideas in my sketchbook, but when descending upon the city and experiencing it for a few minutes during my ride to the airport, I knew this work had to be about Honk Kong. Towers seemingly growing out of the lush dark green mountains, patched up concrete, endless layers of sign-boards, repetitiveness in the architecture, everything piled up, patches of paint, dilapidated walls next to pristine marble facades, tropical plants growing out of every crack in the concrete(even vertical ones). Lots of trash, lots of fog, lots of people, lots of concrete, lots of nature. But everything was functional and ordered.
Inspired by the many, many dimensions of Hong Kong I came up with this Idea of an organised pile of stuff. The first night I went treasure hunting straight away with the WeAreConstant boys, we found blocks of foam among the trash and abandoned construction supplies in alleys. Together with personal objects that were brought in by 3 local creatives (see video) it became a beautiful collection of different items – with different stories, textures, some were old some were new – that formed a cohesive collaboration because of the super organised way of assembling and their uniform non color. Which of course was something that this piece had in common with the shoes.
